Markdown Table Generator

Build a Markdown table one cell at a time. Add rows and columns, choose alignment, and copy the result into your README or notes.

The header is separate. Use 1–12 columns and 0–50 body rows.

Tab / Shift+Tab: next / previous cell. Enter / Shift+Enter: down / up. In a cell, Ctrl/Cmd+Z undoes an edit; Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Z redoes it.

Up to 50 body rows × 12 columns; 2,000 characters per cell. Blank header cells stay blank in the output.

Edit an existing Markdown table

Paste one table with its header and separator row. Loading replaces the grid; Undo can restore it. Surrounding text is not imported.

Table processing happens in your browser. Copy or download before leaving.

Create a table without counting pipes

This Markdown Table Generator is a visual workspace for small tables you want to write or revise yourself. Start with the blank grid, name your columns, and fill in the cells. The Markdown source updates with every edit.

Use this Markdown table maker when the table does not exist yet, or when changing rows in raw Markdown has become awkward. If your data already lives in a workbook, the separate Excel to Markdown tool handles file import.

Choose the right starting point

The input you have determines the quickest workflow.

  • Starting from an idea: fill in the grid above.
  • Editing an existing table: expand “Edit an existing Markdown table”.
  • Working from Excel or CSV: use Excel to Markdown Table.
  • Need a spreadsheet file: use Markdown Table to Excel.

Three examples to check before you copy

Compare the source with the rendered result, then try an example in the editor. Loading an example replaces your current table; Undo restores it. All values are illustrative.

1. Align labels, status, and numbers differently

A release table becomes easier to scan when labels are left-aligned, statuses centered, and counts right-aligned.

Markdown source

| Feature | Status | Issues |
| :--- | :---: | ---: |
| Search | Ready | 2 |
| Export | Review | 12 |

Right alignment helps compare counts. It does not format numbers or calculate totals.

2. Keep a literal pipe inside one cell

Enter draft | final in a cell. The generator inserts an escape so the text stays in a single column.

Markdown source

| Field | Allowed values |
| --- | --- |
| Stage | draft \| final |

Already escaped pipes remain escaped. This also matters when a pipe appears inside inline code.

3. Distinguish an empty value from zero

Keep the owner blank when no one is assigned; enter 0 only when zero is the actual value.

Markdown source

| Task | Owner | Open issues |
| --- | --- | ---: |
| Review | | 0 |

An empty cell is preserved. If the meaning could be ambiguous, use an explicit label such as “Unassigned”.

Small controls that make table editing easier

Keep your attention on the content while the editor assembles the table syntax.

Edit cells directly

Give each column a meaningful heading, then enter one value per cell. Tab moves across the grid; Enter moves down the current column.

Align each column

Keep labels on the left, center short statuses, and align quantities on the right. The separator row changes to match each choice.

Keep inline formatting

Type **bold**, `inline code`, or an inline Markdown link in a cell. Loading an existing table preserves these source fragments.

Undo and redo edits

Step back through recent cell edits, alignment changes, row and column operations, imports, and resets. Continuous typing in one cell counts as one edit; a new edit after Undo clears the redo history.

Copy or download

Copy the generated Markdown into a document or save it as a UTF-8 .md file. The download contains the table, not the surrounding instructions.

Process the table locally

Table generation and preview run in your browser without a conversion upload. The editor does not save a draft; copy or download your work before leaving.

How to use the Markdown Table Generator

Start with a blank three-column grid or load the example to explore the controls.

1

Name the columns and enter data

The shaded first row is the header. Set the table size in one step or add rows and columns as needed. Each row or column menu lets you insert, move, or delete it.

2

Set alignment and inspect the preview

Use the selector above each column. Check that numbers, empty cells, and inline formatting appear in the intended positions.

3

Copy the table into your document

Copy Markdown or download the .md file. Leave a blank line before the table when adding it to a GitHub document, then check the destination preview.

Know what your table can represent

The output targets GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) pipe tables. Rendering can vary in other editors.

Structure and alignment

A table needs a header and a separator row, even when the headings are empty.

  • The default separator is ---. Left, center, and right use :---, :---:, and ---:.
  • Source columns do not need equal character widths. Visual alignment comes from the separator markers.
  • This editor supports up to 50 body rows, 12 columns, and 2,000 characters per cell.

Cell content

Use short inline content so the table stays readable on narrow screens.

  • Unescaped | characters are escaped automatically; an existing \| stays escaped.
  • Blank cells keep their positions. The editor trims outer spaces and turns pasted line breaks into spaces.
  • Merged cells, formulas, nested tables, and multi-paragraph cells are outside this editor’s scope.

Existing Markdown and preview

Import one top-level table at a time; surrounding prose is not included in the output.

  • Imports accept up to 100,000 characters. Code-fenced tables are examples, so remove the fence before importing.
  • Use inline links such as [Docs](https://example.com/docs). Reference-style links need definitions outside the table and are rejected on import.
  • The preview omits raw HTML and displays image alt text without loading images. Links are shown as text; the exported Markdown retains their source.

Tables worth building by hand

A focused table is easier to maintain than a spreadsheet copied wholesale into a document.

README feature comparison

List a few capabilities against supported versions. Use explicit values such as “Yes”, “No”, or “Planned” instead of unexplained symbols.

Release checklist

Use columns for the task, owner, and status. Keep detailed discussion outside the table and link to it from a short label.

Configuration reference

Pair an option name in inline code with a default value and a short explanation. Longer examples belong below the table.

Study and project notes

Compare terms, approaches, or decisions. Split a table if the number of columns makes it difficult to read on a phone.

Markdown table questions

Practical answers about editing, compatibility, and choosing a tool.

Why is my Markdown not showing as a table?

Include a header and a matching separator row, leave a blank line before the table, and use an editor that supports GFM tables. If the table is inside a code fence, it is shown as code; remove the fence before importing.

How is this different from Excel to Markdown Table?

This page starts with an editable grid for creating and revising tables. Excel to Markdown Table starts with spreadsheet data or a file. Use the latter when you already have an Excel workbook, CSV, or copied spreadsheet range.

Can I edit a table copied from an AI chat?

Yes, if it contains a GFM pipe table. Paste the source under “Edit an existing Markdown table”, including the header separator. Import one table at a time and remove any surrounding code fence. Check the values yourself; this tool does not verify the facts in a table.

Why does my table look different after I paste it?

The destination must support Markdown tables. Fonts, wrapping, and table widths depend on its renderer. This preview is a GFM check, not a pixel-perfect reproduction of every app. Raw HTML and images are deliberately not rendered here.

Can I merge cells or calculate totals?

This editor does not merge cells or calculate formulas. Enter a computed value as text, or use a spreadsheet when formulas and merged layouts are essential.

Will my table be saved when I close the page?

No. The table and its undo history live only in this page and are lost on reload or navigation. Copy or download your work before leaving. Undo and Redo help recover recent edits while the page stays open.
